Pastry & Cheese
- 1 (9×13) sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 8 ounces shredded spicy cheddar cheese (e.g., Cabot Habanero cheddar)
Fruit & Nuts
- 2–3 ripe Bartlett pears, sliced (ensure pears are firm, not overly ripe)
- 1/4 cup chopped toasted walnuts
Other
- 1 egg
- 1–2 tablespoons honey
- Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling on top
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Prepare Puff Pastry Base: Lay the thawed puff pastry sheet onto the prepared baking sheet. Use a fork to poke holes evenly across the puff pastry to prevent excessive rising and maintain an even crust during baking.
- Add Cheese and Pears: Sprinkle the shredded spicy cheddar cheese evenly over the puff pastry, keeping a 1-inch border around the edges free of cheese for folding or edge crisping. Then, arrange the sliced Bartlett pears evenly over the cheese layer.
- Brush Edges with Egg Wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg with a fork. Using a pastry brush, brush the egg wash along the exposed edges of the puff pastry crust to help achieve a beautiful golden-brown color when baked.
- Bake the Tart: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the tart for 25-30 minutes until the puff pastry is deeply golden and crisp, and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Add Final Toppings and Serve: Remove the tart from the oven. Drizzle the top with honey, sprinkle toasted walnuts and flaky sea salt over the tart. Use the parchment paper to carefully transfer the tart onto a cutting board. Cut into 9 large squares and serve warm or at room temperature for the best flavor experience.
Notes
- Choose pears that are ripe but still firm to avoid soggy tart.
- For extra flavor, you can toast the walnuts yourself for 5 minutes in a pan or oven before chopping.
- The egg wash enhances browning but can be omitted for a vegan alternative if using vegan puff pastry and cheese substitutes.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator and reheat in a toaster oven or conventional oven to retain crispiness.
- Adjust honey quantity based on your sweetness preference.
