Description

Warm, aromatic mulled apple cider infused with a blend of spices including cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, and fresh ginger. Perfect for cozy gatherings, this slow-cooked cider offers a comforting and flavorful beverage that can be enjoyed as is or spiked with rum or whiskey for an adult twist.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Mulled Apple Cider Ingredients

  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • 1 large lemon, sliced
  • 4 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 2 tsp peppercorns
  • 2 tbsp cardamom pods
  • 2 whole star anise
  • 4 inch fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Pour the apple cider into a slow cooker. Add the sliced lemon, cinnamon sticks, peppercorns, cardamom pods, star anise, sliced ginger, and salt to the cider.
  2. Slow Cook: Set the slow cooker to low heat and cook the cider for 3 to 5 hours, allowing the flavors of the spices and fruit to infuse thoroughly.
  3. Serve: When ready to serve, use a wooden spoon to gently stir and scoop around the spices. Optionally, place a cinnamon stick and a piece of star anise into each glass for garnish and added aroma.
  4. Optional Spiked Version: For an adult version, stir in 1 cup of rum or whiskey to the cider before serving. This adds a warm, spirited flavor that is especially delightful during cooler months.

Notes

  • Be careful not to overheat or boil the cider as it can alter the flavor and evaporate the alcohol if using a spike.
  • You can adjust the spices according to your taste preferences, adding more or less cinnamon or ginger.
  • Using fresh ginger enhances the warmth and depth of flavor more than powdered ginger.
  • Mulled cider can be kept warm in the slow cooker on the low setting for several hours without losing flavor.
  • For a non-alcoholic option, serve as is or substitute the spiked rum or whiskey with apple juice or sparkling water.
