Vegetables
- 3 medium russet potatoes, peeled and chopped into bite-sized pieces
- 1 medium white onion, diced
Meat
- 1 pound lean ground beef
Seasonings
- 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
- 2 tsp minced garlic
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper
Oils
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
Cheese
- 2 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Boil the Potatoes: Place the chopped potatoes in a pot of water and bring to a boil. Cook until the potatoes are tender but not mushy, about 5–7 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
- Cook the Ground Beef: In a large (32cm) non-stick skillet over high heat, add the ground beef. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is evenly browned. Drain off excess fat. Transfer the cooked beef to a separate bowl and set aside.
- Sauté the Vegetables and Seasonings: In the same skillet over medium heat, add the vegetable oil. Add the diced onion, boiled potatoes, Italian seasoning, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Toss thoroughly to coat the potatoes and onions evenly with the seasonings. Cook, stirring often, until the potatoes and onions start to brown, about 5 minutes.
- Combine Beef and Cheese: Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet with the potatoes and onions. Add the shredded cheddar cheese. Mix well until the cheese melts, blending everything together into a cohesive hash.
- Finish and Serve: Remove the skillet from the heat. Serve hot, garnished as desired. For leftovers, store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 4–5 days.
Notes
- Cut potatoes evenly for uniform cooking.
- Feel free to use other varieties of cheese such as Monterey Jack or mozzarella for a different flavor profile.
- For a leaner version, substitute ground turkey or chicken.
- Reheat leftovers in a skillet for best texture.
