Description

A classic Patty Melt featuring juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese sandwiched between crispy rye bread. This indulgent sandwich combines the best elements of a burger and a grilled cheese for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 8 slices rye bread (or your favorite sandwich bread)
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions
Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they caramelize and turn a deep brown color. Monitor closely to prevent burning, reducing heat to medium-low if necessary. Transfer the onions to a plate and wipe the skillet clean.
  2. Prepare and cook the patties
Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then shape it into 4 patties roughly the size of your bread slices. Cook the patties in the skillet over medium-high heat for 3 minutes per side, working in batches if needed. Set the cooked patties aside on a plate.
  3. Toast the bread
Clean the skillet and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add 4 slices of bread and toast until golden brown. Remove 2 slices and flip the remaining two.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches
Place a slice of cheese on each piece of bread in the skillet. Top with a patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Spread mayonnaise on the untoasted side of the remaining bread slices and place them mayo-side down on top of the sandwiches.
  5. Grill the sandwiches
Reduce heat to medium-low and cook the sandwiches for 3 to 4 minutes, flipping halfway through, until nicely toasted and the cheese is melted.
  6. Finish and serve
Remove the patty melts from the skillet and repeat the process with the remaining ingredients. Slice the sandwiches in half and serve immediately with chips or french fries.

Notes

  • Caramelize onions slowly for best flavor and texture.
  • Clean the pan between cooking steps to prevent burning.
  • Grill assembled sandwiches on medium-low heat to ensure even melting and browning.
  • Leftover patty melts can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
