Description

Indulge in the rich, velvety goodness of Chocolate Gravy, a Southern-inspired treat that transforms ordinary biscuits into a decadent breakfast or dessert. This easy-to-make sauce combines cocoa, sugar, and milk for a luxurious pour-over that will satisfy any chocolate lover’s cravings.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar (133g)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (30g)
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (25g)
  • 2 cups whole milk (480ml)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Biscuits for serving

Instructions

  1. Combine dry ingredients:
In a medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and cocoa powder until well combined. This ensures even distribution of flavors and prevents lumps in the final gravy.
  2. Add milk:
Gradually whisk in the whole milk until the mixture is almost smooth. Be sure to incorporate all the dry ingredients, scraping the bottom and sides of the pan.
  3. Cook the gravy:
Place the pot over medium heat and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, whisking occasionally. As the mixture heats, it will begin to thicken. Continue cooking until it bubbles and reaches a gravy-like consistency.
  4. Finish cooking:
Once the mixture is bubbling, continue to cook for 1 more minute, whisking constantly. This final minute ensures the flour is fully cooked and the gravy reaches the perfect thickness.
  5. Add butter and vanilla:
Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cubed butter and vanilla extract. Keep stirring until the butter is completely melted and incorporated, creating a glossy finish.
  6. Serve:
Pour the hot chocolate gravy over freshly baked biscuits and serve immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • For a more complex flavor, add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness and enhance the chocolate notes.
  • A heavy-bottomed, cast-iron skillet can be used as an alternative cooking vessel.
  • Stir the gravy frequently during cooking to prevent scorching and ensure even heating.
  • Leftover gravy can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
