- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar, plus 2-3 tbsp additional if needed
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tbsp milk
- Food coloring, in desired color
Instructions
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 cup of powdered sugar until smooth and well combined.
- Add Flavor and Liquid: Add the vanilla extract and milk to the mixture. Slowly add the remaining powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until combined.
- Adjust Consistency: Continue to add either milk (for a thinner consistency) or powdered sugar (for a thicker consistency) until the desired consistency is achieved.
- Add Color: Add drops of food coloring, one at a time, until the desired color is reached. Mix thoroughly to ensure even coloring.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use real vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste.
- If the frosting is too thick, add milk one teaspoon at a time.
- If the frosting is too thin, add powdered sugar one tablespoon at a time.
- For a different flavor, substitute almond extract or other extracts for the vanilla.
- For a whipped buttercream, beat the frosting on high speed for 2-3 minutes.
