Ingredients
Scale
For the Donuts:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup plain, non-fat yogurt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Cinnamon Sugar:
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- Donut pan (equipment)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a standard-sized donut pan lightly with oil or butter to prevent sticking and set it aside.
- Mix dry and wet ingredients separately: In a medium bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, combine the egg, plain non-fat yogurt, vegetable oil, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Combine batter: Carefully pour the wet ingredient mixture into the dry ingredients and gently mix until just combined. The batter will be slightly lumpy and thick, so avoid overmixing to keep the donuts tender.
- Fill donut molds: Transfer the batter into a large resealable plastic bag and cut a ½ inch hole at one corner to create a piping bag. Pipe the batter into the prepared donut molds, filling each about ¾ full to allow room for rising during baking.
- Bake the donuts: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes, or until the donuts are lightly golden and a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before removing.
- Prepare cinnamon sugar coating: While the donuts are baking or cooling, mix granulated sugar and ground cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Melt the butter in a small bowl separately.
- Coat the donuts: Using a small pastry brush, brush each donut generously with melted butter, then dip each side into the cinnamon sugar mixture. For an extra sweet coating, dip the donuts twice. Serve immediately for best freshness and flavor.
Notes
- Do not overmix the batter; lumps are fine and prevent tough donuts.
- If you don’t have a piping bag, you can spoon the batter directly into the pan, but it may be less precise.
- Make sure donuts are slightly cooled before coating to help cinnamon sugar stick better.
- Donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for 1-2 days.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute yogurt with a plant-based alternative and use a dairy-free butter for coating.
