Ingredients
Scale
Fruit Base
- 6 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced baking apples (about 6 large)
- 4 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced pears (about 5 large)
- 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup light brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
Topping
- 1 ¼ cup old fashioned oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon apple pie spice
- 1 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed
- Pinch of salt
- ½ cup pecan chips (optional)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Make Fruit Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the peeled, cored, and thinly sliced apples and pears with freshly squeezed lemon juice, tossing to coat evenly. In a separate medium bowl, mix together granulated sugar, light brown sugar, all-purpose flour, and apple pie spice. Sprinkle this sugar mixture over the fruit and toss again to coat thoroughly. Pour the fruit mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.
- Prepare the Topping: In a large bowl, combine old fashioned oats, all-purpose flour, apple pie spice, salt, pecan chips (if using), and light brown sugar. Mix the melted and cooled unsalted butter with pure vanilla extract, then pour over the oat mixture. Stir well to combine until the mixture forms a crumbly topping. Evenly crumble this topping over the fruit layer in the baking dish.
- Bake the Crisp: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly and soft.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and serve warm. For added indulgence, top with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, or whipped cream if desired.
Notes
- For this recipe, Honeycrisp apples were used for sweetness and texture. If using tart Granny Smith apples, consider adding an additional 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar to balance the tartness.
- Pecan chips are optional but add a wonderful crunch and nutty flavor to the topping.
- Serving the crisp warm enhances its flavors and pairs beautifully with cold toppings.
