Apple Mixture:
- 10 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 10 cups)
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Crisp Mixture:
- 2 cups quick oats
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups packed light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 cup (2 sticks / 227g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray or butter.
- Prepare Apple Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Gently stir until all the apples are coated in the sugar mixture. Set aside.
- Prepare Crisp Mixture: In a separate medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add the cubed cold butter and use your hands or a fork to mix it into the dry ingredients until the butter pieces are pea-sized or smaller.
- Assemble Crisp: Spread 3 cups of the crisp mixture evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking dish and press down firmly. Pour the apple mixture over the crisp base and press down gently with a spatula. Sprinkle the remaining crisp mixture over the top of the apples.
- Bake: Bake uncovered for 35-45 minutes, or until the apple filling is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Varying Crisp Texture:
- Baking for 35 minutes will result in a slightly caramelized and gooey base layer of oats with a perfectly crispy topping.
- Baking for 45 minutes will create a crispier base layer throughout the crisp. To prevent the topping from becoming too dark, you can cover it with foil after 35 minutes.
- You can use other varieties of apples, but Granny Smith apples provide a nice tartness that balances the sweetness of the dish.
- Adjust the amount of cinnamon to your preference.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
