Filling:
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Cinnamon Rolls:
- 1/3 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 5 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup warm milk
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 2 to 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, or as needed
- 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
Frosting:
- 1/4 cup salted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Make Filling: In a small bowl, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Set aside.
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in warm water. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until foamy.
- Make Dough: In a stand mixer with a dough hook, combine melted butter, warm milk, salt, and remaining sugar. Add the yeast mixture and 1 cup of flour. Mix until smooth. Gradually add remaining flour, ½ cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. Knead for 1-2 minutes.
- First Rise: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes.
- Shape Rolls: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a pie dish or baking pan. Punch down the dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a 10×12 inch rectangle. Spread with softened butter and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar filling. Roll up tightly and cut into 1-inch slices. Place the rolls in the prepared dish.
- Second Rise: Let the rolls rise for 15 minutes.
- Bake: Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly.
- Make Frosting: While the rolls are cooling, beat together softened butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth. Adjust consistency with more milk or powdered sugar as needed.
- Frost and Serve: Frost the cooled cinnamon rolls and serve warm.
Notes
- Storage: Store leftover cinnamon rolls in an airtight container at room temperature. Reheat individual rolls in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.
- Rising Tip: For faster rising, place the dough in a warm, draft-free place, such as a slightly warmed oven (turn the oven off after warming it slightly).
- Make Ahead: Prepare the dough the night before and refrigerate overnight. Let it rise for 1-2 hours before baking.
- Freezing: Freeze baked and cooled rolls in a freezer-safe container. Thaw overnight before serving. You can also freeze the rolled dough; thaw and let rise for 4-5 hours before baking.
